Capoeira São Salvador-PDXAs of November 2014, Mestre Pedro Cruz has reinvented his outpost of Grupo Raça, in order to stay true to the needs and culture of his Portland Capoeira community. With this transformation, a new name has been created. While we remain affiliated with São Bento, we are now São Salvador-PDX. Though Mestre Pedro Cachorro has made this change, he still remains closely connected to his Brazilian roots and the style of Capoeira he grew up on and has taught for many years.
In order to remain vital and continue to grow, São Salvador-PDX hosts fundraising events throughout the year. You may find us entertaining and performing at various venues around Portland with Pedro’s Samba Reggae band, Arrasta, established in 2012. This fundraising allows São Salvador-PDX to host belt graduation events called Batizados, which bring guest teachers from Capoeira groups from all over the US and sometimes Brazil to support São Salvador-PDX students in advancing to higher skill levels. In 2012, Pedro proudly graduated 10 students into the level of Instructor. The growth of his students not only comes from their Capoeira, but from their exposure to the Brazilian language and culture. In order to promote this growth, Pedro has arranged cultural exchange trips to Brazil, the last one occurring in 2015. São Salvador-PDX strives to create a welcoming and supportive environment for new and current students to learn and grow as Capoeiristas and as individuals. We hope to continue supporting the growth of Capoeira and Brazilian culture in Portland and the US for many years to come. |
